Connect Activity
Connect activities get students ready to learn. Choose one or two of the activities below to introduce this week’s lesson.
Drama: Chess Pieces
(5–10 minutes, moderate set-up)
Students will view a drama about the important part the smallest of chess pieces play in winning the game.
Especially for Older Students: Coming Up With a Plan
(10–15 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will work in teams to develop marketing plans for an unusual item.
Especially for Younger Students: Puzzle Pieces
(10–15 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will attempt to assemble puzzles without the proper directions.
Explore Activity
Explore activities lead students to study Scripture. Teach the Key Study to focus on the Biblical Truth. If you choose, support the Key Study with one or two of the following activities.
The Key Study: What Is the Church?
(15 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will begin a yearlong study of the New Testament Church by studying Matthew 16:13–20 and Acts 1:1–3.
Master Teacher Key Study: What Is the Church?
(15 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will begin a yearlong study of the New Testament Church by studying Matthew 16:13–20 and Acts 1:1–3.
Especially for Younger Students: Foundations
(10–15 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will consider the importance of a solid foundation.
Especially for Older Students: Misunderstood
(10–12 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will learn the meaning of Jesus’ declaration that Peter was a “rock.”
Transform Activity
Choose one or two Transform activities to challenge students to live differently. Keep in mind that the Holy Spirit ultimately brings about change, so help students draw near to Him.
Deeper Discussion
(5–8 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will discuss the past, present, and future roles of the Church.
Especially for Younger Students: Like a Rock
(5–10 minutes, moderate set-up)
Students will spend time reflecting on their part in the Church and will keep a rock as a reminder.
Especially for Older Students: Commissioning Ceremony
(8–10 minutes, moderate set-up)
Students will go through a commissioning ceremony as they move toward understanding their roles in the Church for the coming year.
Creative Prayer
(5–7 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will reflect on proclaiming Christ, the foundation of the Church, to the world, by throwing rocks out into the world.
