Especially for Older Students: Coming Up With a Plan

(10–15 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will work in teams to develop marketing plans for an unusual item.

(10-15 minutes, easy set-up)
Download the "Coming Up With a Plan" PDF. Provide a copy for each student. Bring an unusual household item, such as a whisk, yolk separator, or meat tenderizer.

Give each student a copy of the "Coming Up With a Plan" PDF. Tell students to form three-person marketing teams. Say: Each marketing team has five minutes-using the sheet I have provided-to develop a marketing plan for the following product. You must come up with a new way to use the product-something other than originally intended. Show students the unusual household item. Allow groups five minutes to work then ask each team to share. Ask: What was easy about this activity? (coming up with a name or a purpose) What was difficult about this activity? (making decisions about marketing and target audience)
Ask: What would it have felt like to be in the New Testament Church commissioned with the task of making Christ known to the world? Where would you start? (You would have to trust the leadership of the Holy Spirit; you might really struggle to know how to begin.)

Explain that this is the first lesson in a yearlong study of the New Testament Church. Explain that this year they will learn the history of the Church, what it means to be a member of both the local and the global Church, and how they can learn to apply truths from the early Church to their lives today.
