Connect activities get students ready to learn. Choose one or two of the activities below to introduce this week’s lesson.
Especially for Younger Students: Finding the Key
(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will attempt to open a combination lock without being given the combination.
Provide a combination lock, a marker board, and a marker.
Especially for Older Students: Magnetic Attraction
(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will use magnets and paperclips to illustrate the importance of relying on someone stronger than them.
Provide magnets of various strengths and metal paperclips.
Master Teacher Option: Finding the Key
(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will attempt to open a combination lock without being given the combination.
Provide a combination lock, a marker board, and a marker.
Explore
Explore activities lead students to study Scripture. Teach the Key Study to focus on the Biblical Truth. If you choose, support the Key Study with one or two of the following activities.
Interactive Core Study Key Study: The Spirit of Holiness
(15–20 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will study Romans 1:1-6 to examine how the Holy Spirit empowered Jesus to live a sinless life and then raised Him from the dead.
Provide a copy the Student Worksheet and pen for each student. Also provide a dry erase board and marker.
Master Teacher Key Study: The Spirit of Holiness
(15–20 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will study Romans 1:1-6 to examine how the Holy Spirit empowered Jesus to live a sinless life and then raised Him from the dead is within them.
Print one copy of the Master Teacher Key Study for your use. Provide a copy of the Student Worksheet and a pen for each student.
Especially for Younger Students: Understanding Spirit of Holiness
(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will participate in a visual representation of the connection between believers and the Holy Spirit.
Provide a dry-erase board and marker.
Especially for Older Students: The Holy Spirit in the Life of Jesus
(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will study passages of Scripture where the Holy Spirit empowered Jesus to live a sinless life and then raised Him from the dead.
Provide dry erase board, marker, three sheets of paper, and pens.
Transform
Choose one or two Transform activities to challenge students to live differently. Keep in mind that the Holy Spirit ultimately brings about change, so help students draw near to Him.
Deeper Discussion
(5–10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will discuss their responsibility to remain faithful to God’s Word, especially in the face of false teachings.
Especially for Younger Students: Service—One Area at a Time
(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will brainstorm and discuss way to serve the Lord.
Especially for Older Students: Desiring Holiness
(5–8 minutes, moderate set-up)
Students will consider how to rely upon the Holy Spirit to develop holiness in their lives.
Provide a CD/digital media player and prepare to play the song “Holiness” by Sonicflood (The Early Years, 2006). Also provide paper and pens.
Master Teacher Option: Desiring Holiness
(5–8 minutes, moderate set-up)
Students will consider how to rely upon the Holy Spirit to develop holiness in their lives.
Provide a CD/digital media player and prepare to play the song “Holiness” by Sonicflood (The Early Years, 2006). Also provide paper and pens.
Take Home Activity
The Take Home Activity gives families the opportunity to study the biblical passage together and discuss how each member of the family might apply the truths from the lesson to his or her life.
Family Devotion
(10-15 minutes at home, easy set-up)
Distribute copies of the Family Devotion to students and encourage them to share the devotion with their family.
