(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will attempt to open a combination lock without being given the combination.
Provide a combination lock, a marker board, and a marker.
Show the closed lock to the class. Explain that you want to test how well the lock works by allowing several students a chance to open the lock without instructions or help. Enlist three or four volunteers to come to the front. Pass the lock to them and encourage volunteers to attempt a combination to open the lock. When no one is successful, ask: What information or directions do you need to open the lock? (The lock’s combination)
Write the lock’s combination on the board and then allow volunteers the opportunity to open the lock again. Then, ask: Why were you able to open the lock the second time? Emphasize that once you provided the information necessary for the situation, they were able to accomplish the task.
Explain that the Holy Spirit works this way in our lives. Say: If we will rely on the Holy Spirit, He will equip us with the skills necessary to live the way God wants us to live. Share that this lesson will give students the opportunity to examine the power of the Holy Spirit and encourage them to rely upon His power to live obediently before God.
