Lesson Overview
Matthew 5:1–10
Psalm 37:11, 41:1; Luke 6:20–23; 1 Peter 3:14
Matthew 5:6
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave clear examples of how we are to live our lives as Christians.
This lesson begins a study of Jesus’ teachings on consecration. Jesus’ teachings on the Kingdom of God introduced a new way of thinking for the people of His day. Amidst the many political and religious influences that formed Jewish culture, Jesus provided insight into the kind of life God desired. Jesus’ teaching captured the imagination of common people and motivated them to follow Him and learn more about the Kingdom of God. Matthew 5:1–10 challenges believers to be merciful, holy, and set apart for God’s purposes. These values countered the religious thought of the day and revealed radical new ties between faith in God and care for other people.
