STEP TWO: Introduce the Bible Study

Provide a dry erase board and marker. Also provide paper and pens for each group.

Ask: What does it mean to feel safe? After responses, draw two lines down the board, creating three sections. At the top of one section, write “At Home.” At the top of the next section, write “In My Car,” and at the top of the third section, write “At School/Work.” Divide learners into three groups and assign each group one of the headings on the board. Provide paper and a pen for each group and instruct group members to work together to create a list of all the things that are available in their assigned places that help them feel safe there.

After three minutes for discussion, call for groups to report what they identified. As groups report, record their responses under the appropriate heading. Point out the number of things that are listed on more than one list, and emphasize the large total of items listed. Ask: Why has feeling safe become such an issue for us? (because of news reports that remind us of how vulnerable we are) State that the psalmist was facing a difficult journey which made him feel unsafe and vulnerable. Say: In Psalm 121, the psalmist realized that he could be safe only through the watchful care of God.
