Servants: The Why

(5–8 minutes, easy set-up)
Learners will evaluate why they serve Jesus.
Provide index cards or paper and pens.

Point out that we often have different reasons for serving, but sometimes after serving for a while we forget “the why” of what we do. Distribute the index cards and pens. Instruct learners to make a list of each area of service they are involved in. Then, explain that you are going to read a list of “whys” as learners evaluate why they serve each area by writing a notation for each item listed. Read the following “whys” aloud:

Point out that learners could have multiple reasons for serving in any area, but the main point to consider is if we are doing it in response to Messiah, who calls us to follow Him no matter what it costs us.

Now, encourage learners to look through their lists again and to ask themselves the following question: What/where would I serve if I were responding in true obedience to the Messiah––to whom my life belongs? Share that learners can answer with the following responses: the same way; in a different way; add a new area of service; drop an area of service; or replace an area of service with another.

After a couple of moments, close in a time of prayer, encouraging learners to ask for God’s wisdom as they consider how they can best respond to Him as the sovereign Lord over their lives.
