Comparative Study: Joseph’s Response

(5–8 minutes, easy set-up)
Learners will examine Joseph’s reaction to the news of Jesus’ birth in Matthew 1:18-25.

Ask: What kinds of questions do you have about Joseph when he found out about Mary’s pregnancy? As learners voice their thoughts, point out that we do know a little of his thoughts from the account in Matthew. Call on a volunteer to read Matthew 1:18-25. Acknowledge that we don’t know if Mary had told Joseph about her encounter with Gabriel or not. Ask: Regardless, what do we know about Joseph from the way that he wanted to address the situation? (That he was just and kind and wanted to be gentle with Mary)

Ask: How did Joseph’s obedience in verse 24 compare with Mary’s obedience? Emphasize that not only did both of them obey, but they also did so immediately, despite what others in their culture may have thought. Point out that both Mary and Joseph displayed incredible faith in God and His word as they obeyed, allowing them to play tremendous roles in the incarnation of Jesus.
