Ask: How much would someone have do to earn your confidence and to be entrusted with your children? After responses, share the following: Firefighter Robert Sutton was among the first responders to a fire at an apartment building in Atlanta. The flames were quickly engulfing the building. Sutton saw a father hanging out a second-floor window with a small child in his arms. Sutton heard the father yelling for help, and simply responded, “Drop him.” Sutton was in the right position at the right time to catch the child safely. Other firefighters were able to get ladders up to save the father as well. One reporter witnessed Sutton’s catch, describing how “one guy just caught it like a football pass. It was something to see.”

Ask: Do you think it would have made a difference to the father if the person catching the child had been a 10-year-old boy or a feeble looking grandmother? Why? Point out that our trust is rooted in what we believe about the person we are trusting in. Share that in today’s lesson, learners will explore why Mary trusted her future to God after she received some unexpected news that would change her life.
