Ask: How much would do have to trust someone to entrust them with your life? After students share, tell them the story of a firefighter who caught a small child when the child’s father, who was standing in the second story of a burning building, dropped the child into the firefighter’s arms. Say: The smoke was filling up the building, and the father’s only escape was through the window. Explain that when the father yelled for help, the firefighter yelled, “Drop him” and caught the child the father dropped to him, saving the child.

Ask: Do you think it would have made a difference to the father if the person catching the child had been a ten-year-old boy or a feeble looking grandmother? Why? Point out that our trust is rooted in what we believe about the person we are trusting in. Ask: Considering this truth, who would you most trust with your life—not just your physical survival but with your future?

After students briefly discuss their answers, explain that today, students will explore why Mary trusted her future with God after she received some unexpected news that would change her life.
