Relational: Difficult Discipline

(5–8 minutes, easy set-up)
Learners will discuss times of seemingly senseless punishment and how they can learn from discipline.

Explain that like any good parent, God sometimes disciplines His children. Ask learners to form groups of four to discuss: What was the most seemingly senseless form of punishment you have ever received? (For example: A child forgot to make his or her bed, so he or she was required to unmake and then make the bed every hour that day so he or she would not forget next time.)

After a couple of minutes bring the class back together. Ask: Which is a better teacher: senseless punishment or targeted discipline? Why? Emphasize that discipline, when administered correctly by someone who loves us, can be a great teacher. Say: Today we will see God rewarding some people while disciplining others. Let us keep in mind during today’s lesson that God disciplines those He loves, just as any good father would.
