Closer Look: Temptation

Say: Our world doesn’t seem bothered by temptation. In fact, many people are entertained by things that should be avoided. Share the following about the concept of temptation in the Bible:

• When used in relationship to the devil, the meaning always refers to the temptation to sin, to ignore God’s purposes, and to follow our own inclinations.
• When used in connection with God, the Greek word peirazo means “testing something to prove its value,” much like someone would test gold to identify it as genuine (1 Pet. 1:7).
• In Scripture, we learn that the devil tempts us in order to bring us down, while God tests us in order to build us up.

Point out that temptation and testing can be distinguished by their sources and intended outcomes.  Discuss: How can you distinguish between God’s testing and Satan’s temptation? After responses, explain that Satan’s ploy is always spiritually counterproductive. God, on the other hand, allows us opportunities to exercise our faith so that we will be stronger later.
