Learners will discuss the act of crucifixion.
All quotation and facts used are from NIV Archaeological Study Bible.
Explain that crucifixion was seen as a disgraceful and agonizing way to die. Share the following facts about crucifixion:
Ask: Why did Jesus’ crucifixion serve as a “stumbling block” to Jews and Gentiles? (Jews believed those crucified were cursed by God; it was a shameful way to die; crucifixion was used for the worst criminals and those who were threats to Rome.) After responses, discuss: How does a better understanding of the crucifixion allow you to understand the mindset of Mary and disciples? Point out that Jesus experienced agonizing pain that is impossible to understand. State that, as Jesus died, those who loved Him watched helplessly. Express that the empty tomb brought hope, joy, and comfort to those who were consumed by grief. Conclude that the insurmountable joy they experienced from His resurrection can be experienced and celebrated this Easter day.
