Context Study: The Mount of Olives

(5–8 minutes, easy set-up)
Learners will discuss the historical and biblical significance of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.

Explain that the Mount of Olives was one of three peaks on the east side of Jerusalem. State that its name came from the fact that it was covered with olive trees and because its location was instrumental as a lookout point for armies defending Jerusalem.

Help learners consider the historical significance of the Mount of Olives by reading 2 Samuel 15:30, Ezekiel 11:22–23, and Zechariah 14:3–5. Lead learners to highlight the significance found within each passage.

Point out that Jesus’ passage through the Mount of Olives connected Him to David, Ezekiel, and Zechariah (Zech. 14:3–5). Emphasize that passing by the lookout showed that His arrival was in no way an invasion and that He went to Jerusalem knowing that He would give His life on the cross.
