Especially for Older Students: Greatest Love Stories

(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will compile a list of the most famous couples from love stories throughout history.
Provide paper and pen.

Divide students into groups of four or five and give each group a sheet of paper and a pen. Instruct groups to work together to list as many of the most famous couples from love stories throughout history, literature, and movies possible. Point out that “Romeo and Juliet” would be one example. After two or three minutes, explain that you’ve compiled a list of many of these couples. As you call out each of the couples listed below, encourage groups to circle their matching responses:

  1. Romeo and Juliet
  2. Cinderella and Prince Charming
  3. Lancelot and Guinevere
  4. Pocahontas and John Smith
  5. Cleopatra and Marc Antony
  6. Napoleon and Josephine
  7. Bonnie and Clyde
  8. Rachel and Jacob
  9. Paris and Helen of Troy
  10. Aladdin and Jasmine
  11. Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler (Gone with the Wind)
  12. Beauty and the Beast
  13. Adam and Eve
  14. Robin Hood and Maid Marian
  15. Mary and Joseph

Check to see which groups had the most correct matches. Then, ask:

Emphasize that Mary and Joseph are particularly important because God used them to bring His most extravagant gift of love, through the birth of His Son, to us.
