Especially for Younger Students: Faithful Promises

(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will find Old Testament passages that document God’s faithful promises.
Provide pens, a dry erase board, and marker.

Learning Goal: Students will consider the importance of the Old Testament in their faith journeys.

Divide students into groups of three to four and lead them to discuss the following:

Emphasize that Jesus placed great importance on the Old Testament Scriptures because they revealed God’s character to His people and showcased His faithfulness to His promises to send the Messiah who would save the people from their sins. Point out that the Old Testament continues to reveal God’s character and faithfulness to people today.

Instruct students to work in their groups to search the Old Testament for promises concerning God’s faithfulness using Bible concordances or their smart phones. (Note: Websites like www.biblegateway.com offer students the ability to search the Bible text based on key words.) Encourage students to list the verses they find on the back of their worksheets. After three or four minutes, call groups together. Encourage each group to share one verse, listing the verse reference on the board. Continue around the room until groups have shared all the verses they found. Ask: How do these Old Testament verses encourage you to trust that God will faithfully keep His promises? How can recognizing God’s faithfulness in your life be influential in your faith journey? Conclude by encouraging groups to pray together, thanking God for His faithfulness to His promises.
