(6–8 minutes, easy set-up)
Provide a dry erase board and markers.
Divide learners into groups of three or four. Say: As kids, you often got together with friends and played games in teams, which involved choosing sides. Read the following, pausing a minute after each for groups to discuss:
- In what order were you usually chosen for a team: first, last, or near the middle?
- What can you remember about yourself that may have caused you to get chosen in that order?
- How did you feel as you waited for someone to choose you?
- How often were you the one doing the choosing?
Allow time for responses. Write the words insecure and doubtful on the board. Ask: Do either of these words come to mind when you recall waiting to be chosen for a team?
Conclude: Today we will see how an insecure and doubting man was chosen to do something extraordinary.
