Comparative Study: Blessed

Learners will compare Matthew 5:1–10 with some passages from Psalms and Proverbs that describe the kind of person who will receive God’s blessings.

Explain that the Greek word makários can be translated as “blessed” or “happy.” Then share the following information with learners:

Divide learners into four groups. Assign each group one of the following four passages: Psalm 1:1–3, 32:1–2, 119:1–2, and Proverbs 8:32–35. Instruct each group to determine which people are blessed in each passage. Then ask: What is the common basis for God’s blessing? (Answer: Living in relationship with God and following His commands) How does living under God’s blessing surpass being happy?
