Learners will study Matthew 5:1–10 to understand the character traits that Jesus desires for His disciples to develop.

Download the Master Teacher Outline. Print one copy for your own use. Download the Learner Worksheet. Print a copy for each learner. Also provide pens.
Pass out pens and copies of the Learner Worksheet. Then use the Master Teacher Outline to teach Matthew 5:1–10. Afterward, lead learners to form groups of five or six to discuss the following worksheet questions.
- Can there be outward signs that a person recognizes and mourns over his or her sinful nature? If so, what are they?
- What is the difference between meekness and weakness? Is it possible to remain meek yet strongly committed to Christ?
- What does it mean to hunger and thirst for righteousness?
- What are some ways that believers can show mercy to others who have failed to live up to Christ’s standards?
- How can we maintain peace with other people without compromising our faith?
- What are some ways that people suffer persecution for their faith in our community?
