Ask: What are some synonyms for fulfill? (end, complete, finish, goal, and meaning)Explain that the particular word Jesus uses in Matthew 5:17, translated “fulfill,” is found other places in the New Testament. Ask volunteers to read the following passages that use the same Greek word in different translations:

Discuss: How do those verses give a more complete definition of the word? How does this word help your understanding of Jesus’ message? Pay particular attention to the filling of the nets and the room filled with perfume. Explain that this adds a sense of accomplishment and wholeness to the word. A scent fills a room completely, leaving no part of it untouched. Likewise, Jesus leaves no part of the Law and Prophets unfulfilled. He fulfilled the prophecies, and also completely obeyed the Law.

Remind them of the passage in John where the word is translated “complete.” Say: The work of Jesus is complete. He completed the work of the Law, so we can rest in His completion.
