(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will play a game of strength, attempting to move their opponents.

(5-7 minutes, easy set-up)
Preview “New Nature” on page 5 of the Rooted student book OR download the activity sheet.

Ask students if they have ever seen two deer solve a conflict. Then explain that when a problem arises over territory or family, deer will lock antlers in a wrestling match and push one another to prove their power and dominance. Reveal that students will now pair up to face off in their own kind of confrontation.

Tell students to turn to page 5 in the student book and then place it on the ground. Direct students to place one foot on the picture of the deer and the other on the ground as they face their opponent. Then instruct each pair to hold both hands at shoulder height and interlock fingers. Explain that the object of the game is to force one’s opponent off balance and to take a step or let go—but students can use only their hands to accomplish this (as if they were interlocked antlers). Repeat this as many times as you prefer, even until a single winner remains. Then transition to the lesson by saying: Now we’re going to learn about a power that moves everything around in our lives in both authority and love.
