For All Students: I Hope

(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will get to know one another by describing what they want, wish, and dream.

(5-7 minutes, easy set-up)
Preview “I Hope” on page 4 of the Rooted student book OR download the activity sheet.

Direct students to turn to page 4 in the student book. Explain that we use the word hope in a variety of ways, such as communicating when we want something, wish for something, and dream about something. Instruct students to write the first answer that pops into their head for the questions in the three circles. Next, challenge everyone to ask three other people in the group for an answer to any of the questions. Finally, ask for any volunteers to share one of their own answers. (You may choose to share your own answers also in order to establish trust.) Say: Today we’ll get to know each other and ourselves better as we look at what the Bible means when it talks about the word hope. Here’s a clue: It has to do with prized possessions, a major change, and our future—but it is not a want, a wish, or a dream.
