Older Student Option: Spiritual Passport

(5-10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will examine the characteristics that define their spiritual identity.

(5–10 minutes, easy set-up)
Download the “Spiritual Passport” PDF. For each student, provide a pen and a copy of the PDF. Or, if you have purchased the Becoming Student Book, turn to page 11. If you choose, provide music to play.

Ask if any students have ever traveled out of the country. Allow them to share where they have traveled. Ask: What important document do you need to travel overseas? (Passport) What is the purpose of a passport? (It shows your identity; it says you are who you say you are.)

Distribute the pens and the PDF, or, if you have purchased the Student Books, instruct students to locate the activity “Spiritual Passport” on page 11. Say: This passport vouches for your spiritual identity. If God called you to make a document that vouched for your spiritual status, what would that document say? Instruct students to reflect with God and answer the questions on the passport. (You may play music softly to add to the time of reflection.) If you choose, allow students to share their answers to the following questions: Are you a disciple of Christ? Explain your answer. What parts of your identity express to the world your love for Christ? What areas of growth do you long to see in your life?

Remind students that this activity should make them consider the things that define them. Say: You project an identity to the world. In a sense, you are defined by your outward expressions. As followers of Christ, your spiritual identity should be the most important element of who you are. As we go through this study, we will learn that our identities should be wrapped up in Christ. Continue to consider those elements of your identity that make you who you are.
