Younger Student Option: My Spiritual Identity

(5–10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will consider what makes up their spiritual identity.

(5–10 minutes, easy set-up)
Download the “My Spiritual Identity” PDF. For each student, provide a pen and a copy of the PDF. Or, if you have purchased the Becoming Student Book, turn to page 10.

Distribute the pens and the PDF, or, if you have purchased the Student Books, instruct students to locate the activity “My Spiritual Identity” on page 10. Say: The highlighted areas on this body represent your spiritual identity. The head represents your thoughts; the heart represents your interests and passions; and the hands represent your actions.

Start with the head. Instruct students to think about one way their thoughts identify them as followers of Jesus. Instruct them to write this in the blank left of the head. Then, instruct students to share responses. Say: In the next few lessons, we will discover what it means to find our true identity in Jesus Christ. Part of this is honoring God with your thoughts.

Move on to the heart. Instruct students to think about one way they identify themselves as followers of Jesus through their interests and passions. Instruct them to write this in the blank right of the heart. Then, instruct students to share. Say: Our interests and passions show the world what matters to us. What are you communicating to others through your passions?

Finally, move on to the hands. Instruct students to think about one way they identify themselves as followers of Jesus through their actions. Instruct students to write this in the blank left of the hand. Then, instruct students to share. Say: One of the most powerful ways we show the world who we are is through our actions. Do your actions say your identity is found in Jesus?

Explain that students will be challenged to go deeper in their search for identity. Encourage them to think about what they have written and how they might do more to identify themselves with Jesus.
