(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will consider what about them makes up their identity.
(10 minutes, easy set-up)
Download the “Personal Profile” PDF. Print a copy for each student. If you have purchased the Becoming Student Book, turn to page 4. Provide a pen for each student.
Distribute the “Personal Profile” PDF, or, if you have purchased the Becoming Student Book, instruct students to turn to page 4. Instruct students to answer the questions. When they finish, tell students to stand up. Read each question aloud. Instruct students to get in groups according to their answers. (Example: For question one, brown eyes gets in a group, blue eyes in another, etc.) Repeat this for every question.
As you go down the page, students will find themselves less likely to be in a group. Ask students to elaborate on their responses. (Example: “How did your dad make such an impact on your life?”)
Instruct students to define identity. Allow responses. Then, say: Webster’s Dictionary defines identity as “the distinguishing character or personality of an individual” (www.webster.com). Say: When combined, the things you listed paint a picture of you. You share some things (like eye color) with others. But much of who you are is unique. This is the essence of your identity. Explain that students will be focusing on the characteristics that make them who they are.
