(5–7 minutes, easy set-up)
Students will list the necessary steps in the journey toward fuller holiness.
(5–7 minutes, easy set-up)
Provide a dry erase board and dry erase marker.
Learning Goal: Students will understand that God has called them to live up to His own standard of holiness.
Ask: What actions would you take to get ready for the beginning of school? to participate in a 5K race? List responses on the dry erase board. Then call on a volunteer to read 1 Peter 1:13 again. Remind students that the phrase “prepare your minds for action” is best understood when translated “gird up the loins of your mind.” Share that since the clothing worn during New Testament times included long garments that reached to the ground, a person would pull up (or “gird”) the garment and tuck it into his belt in order to move around more freely. Ask: Why do you think that someone would have needed to do this? (Possible answers: working in the fields, going into battle, running)
Ask: How important is the preparation process in getting ready to do something? On the board, write “prepare your minds”. Then ask: What actions would be part of preparing your minds to learn to be holy? (prayer, Bible study, surrounding yourself with others on the same journey) Why is it not possible to take the journey into holiness without preparing your minds? Emphasize that the success of any project requires appropriate preparation, including the journey toward holiness.
